Privacy Policy

TappaTag (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the TappaTag smart pet tag service and the website at tappatag.com (the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. The Service is offered solely to residents of the United States; see “Geographic Scope” below.

Privacy is built into TappaTag. We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Your home address is never displayed. With TappaTag Protect, your phone number stays private from finders.

Geographic Scope

TappaTag is operated from the United States and is intended only for residents of the United States. We do not knowingly collect personal information from individuals located outside the United States. By using the Service, you represent that you are located in the United States.

Information We Collect

From pet owners (account holders):

  • Account information: name, email address, phone number, and password.
  • Pet information: name, photo, description, and any notes you choose to add.
  • Optional veterinarian information: clinic name and phone number, if you add them to your pet's profile.
  • Walk logs and streak data: walks you log by tapping your tag, dates, and streak counts.
  • Billing information for TappaTag Protect renewals, processed by Stripe. We do not store your full card number.

From finders (people who tap a lost pet's tag):

  • Phone number, when a finder places a call to the owner through our private relay (for Protect subscribers).
  • Call metadata: time, duration, and whether the call was answered.
  • SMS content, if the finder exchanges text messages with the owner through our private relay (for Protect subscribers).

Automatically, when a tag is tapped:

  • The tag's unique ID.
  • The device's user agent string (browser and operating system type).
  • The time of the scan.

We do not collect the finder's GPS location, precise device identifiers, or any personal information about the finder unless they voluntarily place a call or send a message through the Service.

Categories of Personal Information

For purposes of US state privacy laws, the categories of personal information we collect are: identifiers (name, email, phone number, account ID), commercial information (purchase and renewal history), internet or network activity (browser and device type, scan timestamps), geolocation only at the level inferred from a phone number area code (no precise GPS), and audio or electronic information (voice and SMS content routed through the relay). We collect this information from you directly, from finders who interact with your tag, and automatically through routine Service operation.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Display your pet's finder page when someone taps the tag.
  • Route finder calls and messages through our private relay (for Protect subscribers).
  • Send you SMS alerts when a finder contacts you (for Protect subscribers).
  • Deliver optional pet care reminders you enable.
  • Track walks and streaks you log.
  • Process payments for TappaTag Protect renewals.
  • Communicate with you about your account, including security and service updates.
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and misuse of the Service.
  • Improve the Service and understand how it's used in aggregate.

Your Phone Number & Privacy

With TappaTag Protect (active): When a finder taps your pet's tag, they see your pet's name, photo, and a “Call Owner” button. Tapping that button routes the call through a private relay. Your real phone number is never revealed to the finder. Your home address is never displayed on the finder page under any circumstances.

Without TappaTag Protect (expired or not renewed): The finder page remains active and displays your pet's name, photo, and a “Call Owner” button. However, the button connects the finder directly to your phone number using a standard tel: link, which will reveal your number to the finder in their phone dialer or call history.

Every TappaTag includes one year of Protect at no additional cost. You can renew Protect at any time from your dashboard to restore the private relay.

Veterinarian Information

If you choose to add your pet's veterinarian information to your pet's profile, the clinic name and phone number will be displayed on the finder page under “Medical & Vet Info” for emergency reference. This information is provided by you and is treated as publicly listed business contact information. You may add, change, or remove it at any time.

Finders

If you are a finder who has tapped a lost pet's tag: the tag scan itself logs only the tag's ID, the type of browser or device you used, and the time. We do not identify you, locate you, or retain any personal information from the tap alone.

If you choose to place a call or send a text through the “Call Owner” button, your phone number is transmitted to our call-relay provider so the call can be connected. For Protect-active tags, your number is also shared with the pet's owner so they can follow up with you. For non-Protect tags, you are connected directly to the owner's phone number just as if you had dialed it yourself.

Walk Logging & Activity Data

When you tap your own pet's tag to log a walk, we record the walk timestamp and update your streak count. Walk logging, streak tracking, and shareable streak cards are available to all TappaTag owners regardless of Protect status. Streak data is stored in your account and is not shared publicly unless you choose to generate a shareable streak card. Shareable streak cards are images that display your pet's name, photo, and streak length, and are intended to be shared to social media at your discretion. We do not post on your behalf.

SMS & Voice Communications

By providing your phone number, you consent to receive SMS text messages and voice calls from TappaTag as described below.

SMS (Protect subscribers):

  • Call alerts — Automatic SMS when a finder calls you through the relay, whether answered or missed.
  • Pet care reminders — Optional reminders for flea & tick, heartworm, grooming, and vet visits. You choose which to enable, and can turn them on or off any time.
  • Account notices — Occasional security, billing, or service notices.

Voice (Protect subscribers): The private call relay connects finders to owners without revealing the owner's number. Voice is only used for finder-to-owner calls and is never used for marketing or reminders.

Without Protect: No SMS alerts or voice relay services are provided. The finder contacts you directly.

Message frequency varies. Call alerts depend on finder activity; care reminders follow the schedule you select. Standard message, data, and calling rates from your carrier may apply. You may opt out of SMS at any time by replying STOP. Reply HELP for assistance.

Service Providers

We share the minimum information necessary with trusted service providers that help us operate the Service. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Service providers fall into the following categories:

  • Cloud infrastructure and database hosting — storage of account, pet, and walk data.
  • Application and website hosting — delivery of tappatag.com and the Service.
  • Telecommunications providers — voice call relay, SMS alerts, and pet care reminders.
  • Email delivery — transactional emails such as password resets and account notices.
  • Payment processing — handled by Stripe for TappaTag Protect renewals; full card details are provided directly to Stripe and are not stored by TappaTag.

Each provider is contractually required to use your information only to perform services for TappaTag and to maintain reasonable security and confidentiality protections. We may change providers from time to time as the Service evolves.

We may also disclose information if required by law, in response to valid legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of TappaTag, our users, or others.

Analytics & Cookies

We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies necessary to operate the Service, such as keeping you signed in. We may use basic, privacy-respecting analytics to understand aggregate Service usage. We do not use advertising trackers, cross-site tracking, or sell browsing data. We do not currently respond to “Do Not Track” browser signals because no consistent industry standard for them exists; however, we honor opt-out preference signals (such as Global Privacy Control) where required by applicable law.

Data Retention

We retain account information, pet profiles, walk logs, and tag scan records for as long as your account is active. If you close your account, we mark these records closed and do not actively use them, except where retention is required for legal, tax, accounting, fraud prevention, or security purposes.

Voice and SMS communications routed through our private relay are handled by a third-party telecommunications provider and are subject to that provider's own retention policies, which we do not control. We do not separately archive, back up, or extend the retention of call or message content beyond what the provider maintains.

Your Rights

All TappaTag users have the following choices:

  • Review and update your account information at any time from your dashboard.
  • Turn individual SMS reminders on or off from your dashboard.
  • Opt out of all SMS by replying STOP to any message.
  • Request deletion of your account and associated personal information by contacting us at hello@tappatag.com.

Depending on your state of residence, you may have additional rights, including the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect about you and how we use it.
  • Access a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate personal information.
  • Delete personal information we have collected, subject to legal exceptions.
  • Opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. As noted above, TappaTag does not engage in either practice.
  • Non-discrimination — we will not deny you the Service, charge you a different price, or provide a different level of service for exercising your privacy rights.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@tappatag.com. We will verify your identity using information already associated with your account and respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. You may also designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf.

Data Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your personal information, including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and secure authentication. No method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the event of a data breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law.

Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to children, and the Terms of Service require account holders to be at least 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, contact us at hello@tappatag.com and we will delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. If the changes are material, we will notify you by email to the address associated with your account at least 30 days before the change takes effect.
